Why is Open rhinoplasty procedure necessary?

To elongate and reshape the nose,open rhinoplasty with reconstructing the nasal structure could not be avoided. Simply silicone implant augmentation as before cannot produce the desired aesthetic result.

To reconstruct the nose, additional cartilage grafts are usually needed either from nasal septum,from the auricle or from the rib. Due to Asian small nose,the nasal septum cartilage is always too small and weak. Auricular cartilage is too soft as support graft while the rib cartilage is strong but autologous rib rhinoplasty is not only tedious and invasive but also visible scar at chest area.

Why PCL?

Polycaprolactone (PCL)  is a new FDA approved synthetic absorbable porous material . It is absorbed completely in 2 years. PCL has been fashioned into mesh for use as implants and support. Its use is mainly as a scaffold for tissue regeneration and supporting graft in nose surgery. 

Recovery time for open rhinoplasty with PCL

Though the surgical time in open rhinoplasty with PCL is longer ,the recovery time is not much longer than normal closed rhinoplaty technique. It takes about one week for recovery and it would be naturally looking in one to three months depending on each physical health.
